Undefeated Zenyatta to have her own day

Undefeated Zenyatta is getting her own day at Hollywood Park to celebrate the mare who ended her career with a 14-0 record and a victory over the boys in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic.

She will be saluted at her home track on Nov. 29. She is set to start her breeding career next year in Kentucky.

Zenyatta will parade between races on the program and fans in attendance will receive a DVD entitled "Zenyatta, A Living Legend," featuring all 14 of her races. A poster reading "Girl Power, Go Zenyatta" will be distributed.

Owners Jerry and Ann Moss will be on hand, along with trainer John Shirreffs and Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith.

Dominguez and Maragh triumph at Aqueduct
Ramon Dominguez and Rajiv Maragh each rode two winners Sunday in the New York Stallion Series at Aqueduct.

The five stakes were restricted to the sons and daughters of stallions standing in New York. The Great White Way and the Fifth Avenue, both for 2-year-olds, were worth $100,000; the other three carried $75,000 purses.

It was another big day for Dominguez, New York's leading jockey this year, with four winners on the afternoon. He scored with Uncle T Seven in the Thunder Rumble ($7.50 to win) and Mother Russia ($4) in the Staten Island.

Maragh booted home Ruffino ($2.70) in the Cormorant and Franny Freud ($6.20) in the Fifth Avenue.

Hall of Famer Edgar Prado captured the other stakes with Make Note ($4.70) in the Great White Way.

Breeders' Cup Horses are Clean - Horse Racing

All horses that ran in the Breeders' Cup have tested negative for illegal performance-enhancing drugs.

The California Horse Racing Board said testing was completed Tuesday and all the samples came back clear from the UC Davis laboratory.

All entrants underwent pre-race blood testing for TCO2, a performance-enhancing alkalizing agent known as a ``milkshake,'' while post-race blood and urine testing was done on the top three finishers in all 14 races plus random horses selected by the stewards at Santa Anita.

The tests checked for more than 45 anabolic steroids and hundreds of other prohibited drugs.

Out-of-competition testing was also done on 25 percent of all horses pre-entered in the two-day world championships, with samples analyzed in Europe for international entries.

Nicholls targets Paddy Power Gold Cup

Champion trainer Paul Nicholls has entered three for Saturday's Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham...

Champion trainer Paul Nicholls dominates the ante-post market for Saturday's Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham with Chapoturgeon, Poquelin and Tatenen.

Former Paddy Power Gold Cup winner Our Vic heads a list of 25 possibles for this year's race with David Pipe's 11-year-old set to carry top-weight of 11st 12lb should he take his chance.

Nigel Twiston-Davies has a strong hand having left in Knowhere and Ballyfitz, while Alan King's Tarotino and Nicky Henderson's mare My Petra are other interesting contenders.

King's stable jockey Robert Thornton is hoping he can win the valuable prize for the first time on Tarotino having finished third on Kandjar D'Allier in 2005 and second on Il Duce two years later.

"He's been very good at home and although I've not ridden work on him, I've been told that he's been going well," said Thornton.

"Schooling-wise I popped him over six to nine fences the other morning and he jumped very well as he always does.

"Wayne Hutchinson rode him at Bangor (last time out) as I had to go to Punchestown to ride one or two for Alan, but now this fellow's going for a bigger race.

"Wayne was very pleased with him. He should have won his first race for us at Huntingdon, but his confidence has grown from there and hopefully he's still progressing.

"He is definitely up there with Il Duce and Kandjar D'Allier and every bit as good as them.

"Good or good to soft would be ideal and any slower is a minus."

Tranquil Sea, Northern Alliance and Jaamid are the three Irish contenders.

Breeder’s Cup 2009 Betting Picks - Breeder's Cup Betting Odds

Watch out, It’s Billie Jean vs. Bobby Riggs all over again this weekend, except for the fact that this Billie will have to beat TWELVE Bobbie’s. The 5-year old female sensation Zenyatta will race against twelve males in the Breeders Cup Classic, second only to the Kentucky Derby as the biggest race of the year. It will be the mares first time in the Classic and first time running against the boys.

Breeder’s Cup 2009 Betting Picks
No female has ever won this race and only three have even tried, with Jolyphya’s third place finish in 1992 being the best finish by a female so far. But this is a very un-girl like girl - the mare stands at a massive seventeen hands (for readers who are unfamiliar with horse latitudes and longitudes seventeen hands is freakishly large.)

In addition to running against males for the first time, it will also be her first time running the distance of a mile and a quarter, but apparently both facts are overshadowed by her 13-0 lifetime record, because she is still the betting favourite at odds of 5-2.

Between now and Saturday, I will work on whittling down the field to isolate my play in The Classic and the other races on the card. Handicapping the thoroughbreds is very unlike ‘capping other sports, with your picks changing right up until post time.

My final plays, including head to head match ups, will be sent to team mates via PUB’its at Bet Republic, all throughout the day on Saturday.

To me, ‘capping the nags is more a matter of eliminating also-rans than picking the winner. I haven’t completed all of my work, but I have my identified the first two horses that do not make my cut.

Breeder's Cup Betting Odds
I start by tossing out the Birds – Mine That Bird and Summer Bird.
Mine That Bird won the Derby in a huge upset. His last start? Disappointing 6th in the Good Wood stakes last month. Already beaten by a girl, he gets no respect from me in this one. Summer Bird? Two problems – he doesn’t seem to like the synthetic surface that they have at Santa Anita, and, like Mine That Bird, he has also already been beaten by a girl.

2009 Breeders' Cup post times to be announced.

The 2009 Breeders’ Cup is just about upon us! Comprised of 14 races over 2 days, the Breeders’ Cup is America’s biggest days of thoroughbred action!

With horses arriving from all over the world and with total purses close to 26 million, there’s no wonder that the Breeders’ Cup has become the two biggest days in horse racing in North America.

This year’s races will showcase two of America’s most popular horses, the undefeated Zenyatta and the Belmont and Travers winner, Summer Bird.

Zenyatta’s connections have been quiet on whether or not she will run in the Ladies’ Classic on Nov. 7th. 6th or the Classic on Nov. 7th. In whichever race she runs, Zenyatta figures to be a short-priced favorite unless bettors decide to knock down the Travers winner, Summer Bird, to favoritism. A win in the Classic no doubt would give Summer Bird the right to claim the Horse of the Year title.
